Lichfield’s Peace Woodland

After hearing about a call for volunteers, I joined with some friends to plant some of the many trees that are going to form an incredible ‘Peace Woodland’ in our local park in Lichfield.

All the trees have been ‘rescued’ from areas that were being cleared and would have been destroyed. They have been cared for by the parks team and are now being planted to create a living memorial.

There have been a series of volunteer sessions, with the last next on Sunday 27 January, 10am to 2pm.

It was lovely to be able to be part of this and to plant a selection of trees that could ow be here in Lichfield for centuries…. I always love tree planting as it is creating such a legacy for the future generations.

The information below is taken from the Lichfield Cathedral website:

THE PEACE WOODLAND

2018 marks 100 years since the guns of World War One fell silent. Those who survived hoped it would be ‘the war to end all wars’ but the last century has seen millions more suffer in conflict all around the world. We must never forget the sacrifices made in war – we must also always continue to strive for peace.

A permanent new woodland in Beacon Park

Lichfield Cathedral is working in partnership with Lichfield Historic Parks to create a new Peace Woodland in Beacon Park. The Peace Woodland will be a permanent living artwork created by Lichfield Cathedral’s artist-in-residence Peter Walker. During the year, the Parks team will save 1,918 local trees which would otherwise be felled. Volunteers will pot them ready to start planting on Armistice Day, 11 November 2018. The Peace Woodland will open at Easter 2019, a time to rejoice in new life, hope and the promise of peace on earth.

At the centre of the woodland will be a bronze plaque as a dedication to peace; for £25 you can add a name, whether your own, a friend or a family member, to be permanently inscribed on the plaque.

Thank you for all those involved in organising this wonderful project…. I look forward to seeing it develop over the coming years….
