2019 off to a reasonable start

Overcast, 5°, light NNW. A Little Egret seen today on the way out to Lollingdon and appeared to drop down near Amwell Spring. The hill hosted around 100 Fieldfare and a flock of c50 Meadow Pipit for a time before moving off over the top. Several Reed Bunting and Yellowhammer around the hill and a single Corn Bunting . A small flock of c20 Pied Wagtail feeding out with the Sheep. A few more Fieldfare and Redwing scattered around the Lollingdon area, a Goldcrest , Grey Heron , Kestrel , a couple of Jay , 2 Bullfinch and several Starling amongst other species. A Brambling in a private garden. Per Alan Dawson. 2 Blackcap in TW’s garden and 2 Chiffchaff at CSW. The flock of c60 Golden Plover still around Cholsey Hill. Clifden Nonpareil

Cloudy with some heavy rain, 18°, light to blustery SSW Another rare moth caught by Tony Rayner today. A Clifden Nonpareil or Blue Underwing. The second record for Cholsey after one last year. This moth recolonised southern England in 2007 and is slowly spreading northwards. The unusual name of this moth derives from the first British records on the Cliveden estate in Berkshire in the 18th century and nonpareil meaning “without equal” in French. Birdwise: A flock of 50+ Hirundines over Church road this morning feeding along the edge of a rain front and moving off to the south east. Virtually all House Martin and 3 Swallow noted. Possibly the same or another flock back after the rain ceased feeding over Whitehead Meadow and surrounding area. NestEnders Update – April 7th

It’s all ‘go’ in my garden and, at this time of the year, I spend a silly amount of time watching footage, uploading and processing clips and sharing my footage. The incredible response I get from people all over the world (mainly on Twitter!) keeps me doing it, as I feel that my clips can engage and get people interested in the wonderful British wildlife that is right on our doorsteps! I am filming a selection of nests this year and things are looking promising. The first clips are from my Hub nest box, which is live streaming t the moment, so you can log in and watch it via my website or on CJ WIldlife’s website. The blue tits have been busy over the last few days, making final touches to the nest. Once they have built the majority of the nest, they begin to bring in softer materials, such as feathers, fluff and fur.
